We are more than pleased and honored that despite the Covid-19 measures and restrictions, the Falling Walls Lab Ankara, a global science communication contest for highly motivated young students and researchers, still could take place the fifth time in a row, finally again face-to-face at CoZone, Ankara.

On 15th September 2021, participants, the so-called “Labsters” from different Turkish Universities, presented their research projects within no more than three minutes, highlighting their innovative aspects and potential impacts on the advancement of science in front of a highly distinguished jury of experts from academia and business and the general public. The event was jointly hosted by CoZone, Middle East Technical University and Bilkent University Ankara and was moderated by the Master of the Ceremony Dr. Dr. Lutz Peschke from Bilkent University in Ankara, added by welcoming remarks from Franziska Trepke, Director of the DAAD-Information Centre in Ankara, Florian Burkhardt, Head of the Economics Department from the German Embassy in Ankara and Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil, Vice President of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBITAK) who is supporting the event since 2017.

This year, 10 pre-selected young researches and students were invited to present their approach to breaking down new walls to knowledge in Ankara. An impressive variety of nationalities, research fields, career levels and home institutions were represented, resulting in very different topics, from energy insufficiency in rural areas to learning legal English online, and urbanization difficulties. In the end, three winners were selected based on Falling Walls´ three key criteria: Breakthrough Factor, Relevance and Impact, and Performance and Structure. The first place receives an invitation and a flight ticket to attend the Falling Walls Lab finale on November 8, 2021 in Berlin, in which the winners from more than 70 Falling Walls Labs worldwide participate.

Review - Virtual Falling Walls Lab Ankara 2020

Falling Walls Lab Ankara 2020 – the first digital Lab worldwide!

In the light of the developments of COVID-19 and the worldwide measures taken to slow the spread of the virus, the Falling Walls Lab Ankara 2020 event couldn’t take place as a personal gathering this year.

In response to the ongoing situation and with the strong belief that science communication is more important than ever, we had nevertheless decided to continue with the organization of the Lab in a different way, that considers the health and well-being off all involved, to discuss breakthroughs in science and society.
